 English translation

As you approach the mountain called Devagiri, a cool wind will blow gently below. It will be delightful because it touches the fragrance of the earth made to breathe by your rain. It will be beautiful with the sound of water flowing through stream-hollows and will be drunk in by elephants. That wind will ripen the forest Udumbara trees.

Literary meaning

Kālidāsa creates a full monsoon forest scene. The cloud releases rain; the wet earth exhales fragrance; streams begin to sound through hollows; elephants drink the cool air; and the Udumbara figs in the forest begin to ripen. Udumbara is therefore used as a sign of rain-fed abundance, forest fertility, animal life, and seasonal maturity.

Why did Kālidāsa select Gular?

1. It visibly marks fruiting abundance

Udumbara fruits appear in conspicuous clusters directly on the trunk and branches. A forest with ripening Udumbara trees is visually memorable.

2. It responds to the monsoon

The verse says the cool wind will ripen the forest Udumbaras. Kālidāsa uses the tree as a seasonal marker of the rain-fed forest.

3. It connects rain, earth, water and fruit

The same verse includes rain-wet earth fragrance, stream sounds, elephants, cool wind, and ripening figs. Udumbara completes the ecological chain from rainfall to food.

4. It belongs naturally to forest edges

The phrase काननोदुम्बराणाम् places the tree in the forest, matching its ecological role as a native fig of woodland and riparian habitats.

5. It supports animal life

Udumbara fruits are eaten by many animals. Kālidāsa’s mention of elephants in the same verse makes the forest feel large, inhabited, and fertile.

6. It deepens the sensory richness

The verse is not only visual. It contains smell, sound, touch, coolness, animal breath, and fruit ripening. Udumbara gives the scene taste and nourishment.

Kālidāsa selected Udumbara because it is a powerful monsoon forest tree. Its ripening figs show that the rain has moved through the whole ecosystem: soil breathes, streams sound, elephants rejoice, cool winds blow, and the forest becomes fertile.
