नीपं दृष्ट्वा हरित-कपिशं केसरैरर्धरूढैः
आविर्भूत-प्रथममुकुलाः कन्दलीश्चानुकच्छम् ।
जग्ध्वाऽरण्येष्वधिकसुरभिं गन्धमाघ्राय चोर्व्याः
सारङ्गास्ते जललवमुचः सूचयिष्यन्ति मार्गम् ॥ १.२१॥

Transliteration

nīpaṃ dṛṣṭvā harita-kapiśaṃ kesarair ardharūḍhaiḥ
āvirbhūta-prathama-mukulāḥ kandalīś cānukaccham |
jagdhvāraṇyeṣv adhikasurabhiṃ gandham āghrāya corvyāḥ
sāraṅgās te jala-lava-mucaḥ sūcayiṣyanti mārgam || 1.21 ||

Meaning:
“The Kandalī plants along the moist bank have put forth their first buds.”

English translation

The deer will show you the way as you travel, releasing drops of water. They will see the Nīpa tree, greenish-brown with its stamens only half emerged; they will feed on the Kandalī plants whose first buds have appeared along the marshy banks; and in the forests they will inhale the especially rich fragrance of the rain-moistened earth.

Literary meaning

Kālidāsa describes the first awakening of the monsoon landscape:

Nīpa begins to open;
Kandalī puts forth its first buds on wet banks;
the earth releases a deep fragrance after rain;
deer become active and guide the cloud’s path;
the cloud’s route becomes readable through plants, animals, soil, scent, and moisture.

Kandalī is therefore not merely a named plant. It is a sign that the wetland edge has come alive after the first rains.

Why did Kālidāsa select Kuṭaja?

1. It is a precise wetland marker
Kālidāsa uses अनुकच्छम्, meaning along the wet bank. Kandalī is suitable because it grows in shallow wet or marshy places.
2. It shows the first effect of rain
The phrase आविर्भूत-प्रथममुकुलाः shows the plant at the moment of first budding. This is exactly the kind of subtle change that happens at the beginning of the monsoon.
3. It helps the cloud’s route become visible
The deer, after seeing and feeding on the rain-awakened vegetation, guide the cloud. Kandalī is part of the natural sign-system of the route.
4. It belongs to the world of scent and moisture
The same verse mentions the strong fragrance of rain-wet earth. Kandalī grows in that moist world, making the landscape tactile and fragrant.
5. It balances the Nīpa image
Nīpa appears above, with half-emerged stamens. Kandalī appears below, along the marshy bank, with first buds. Together they show vertical ecological layering: tree and wetland herb.
6. It demonstrates botanical observation
Kālidāsa does not simply name a beautiful flower. He observes plant stage, habitat, animal behaviour, and monsoon timing. Kandalī proves his sensitivity to seasonal ecology.
Kālidāsa selected Kandalī because it is an early monsoon wetland plant. Its first buds appear along moist banks after rain, and deer respond to the revived vegetation and fragrant earth. It makes the cloud’s journey feel alive, scented, and ecologically accurate.
