 English translation

In Alakā, the women hold playful lotuses in their hands. Fresh Kunda flowers are woven into their curls. The beauty of their faces is brought to a delicate paleness by the pollen of Lodhra flowers. Fresh Kuravaka flowers adorn their hair-knots, charming Śirīṣa flowers decorate their ears, and Nīpa flowers born from your arrival are placed in the parting of their hair.

Literary meaning

Śirīṣa is the ear-ornament flower in this verse. Kālidāsa selects it for delicacy, softness and lightness. The flower is not heavy like a garland; it is placed at the ear, where its soft, powder-puff stamens and gentle colour suit the refined beauty of Alakā’s women.

Why did Kālidāsa select Sirisa?

1. For softness

Śirīṣa flowers are light, silky and delicate. This makes them suitable for the ear, a sensitive and graceful part of the body.

2. For refined feminine ornament

In the floral body-map of Alakā’s women, Śirīṣa occupies the ear. It completes the sequence of natural cosmetics and ornaments.

3. For contrast with other flowers

In the same verse, Kunda gives white delicacy, Lodhra gives pale facial powder, Kuravaka gives colour in the hair-knot, Nīpa gives monsoon freshness, and Śirīṣa gives soft ear-level elegance.

4. For texture rather than heavy fragrance

Śirīṣa is chosen not mainly as a strong perfume plant, but as a flower of tactile beauty. Its powder-puff stamens are soft and airy.

5. To show Alakā’s living luxury

The women of Alakā do not need artificial jewels alone. Their ornaments are living flowers, pollen, leaves and seasonal blossoms.

6. For śṛṅgāra rasa

Śirīṣa contributes delicacy, softness, fragrance, femininity and intimacy. These qualities support the emotional mood of love and beauty in Uttaramegha.

Kālidāsa selected Śirīṣa because it is the perfect flower of soft ear-adornment. Its light, silky flowers suit the refined celestial women of Alakā and complete the poem’s botanical ornament system.
